Best of 2025

Welcome to our Best of 2025 list! As you will soon learn, 2025 is The Year Abby and Braden Went To Peru, and many of our best things from this year happened in that one hectic, perfect week. But we had lots of other adventures: Braden went to Spain, we explored some of our neighboring states, we all got some quality Idaho time, and we had some fun right here in Iowa too. So, without further ado, in no particular order, here are this year’s winners!

Best Meal - Zig Zag (Arequipa, Peru)

When the waiter sat us next to the Eiffel-designed spiral staircase and put huge paper bibs on us, we knew we were in for a good time. We ordered the Ramillete de Quatro Lomitos - small steaks of beef, chicken, lamb, and alpaca served on a slab of volcanic rock, accompanied by four tasty sauces. It came with sides of potatoes, quinoa, and veggies. We also each ordered two drinks - Cola Escosesa and Chicha Morada. After the meal we had to go back to the hotel to take a nap. Please enjoy these videos of Braden and Abby trying alpaca meat for the first time!

Best Breakfast Burrito - Tres Hermanos (American Falls, Idaho)

This longtime favorite has yet to be beat! Best enjoyed at Three Layer Park with the roar of the dam behind you and a stray cat eyeing your burrito from a distance.

Best Celebrity Sighting - The Pigeon

The Pigeon came to Mom’s library, so of course we had to say hello! Frankie has historically hated the sight of people in mascot costumes, but she was surprisingly excited to see the pigeon and take a photo with the star of her favorite books.

Weirdest Pizza - Gas Station Breakfast Pizza (Iowa)

When Abby’s coworker suggested that they order a breakfast pizza to share, she had so many questions. Is this an Iowa thing? (Yes.) Which restaurant should we order from? (Not a restaurant - Casey’s gas station.) What’s on it? (Bacon, scrambled eggs, and green peppers. And it has cheese sauce instead of tomato sauce.) Is it actually good? (Actually, yes!) Is Braden still suspicious? (Undoubtedly.)

Worst Travel Experience - TIE! Driving from Iowa to Idaho, Flying from Idaho to Iowa

For the first 14 hours of our 17-hour car ride to Idaho for Christmas, things were going as well as could be hoped. Sure, the car had made some weird sounds around Omaha, and Frankie didn’t fall asleep until 10 pm, but we were making pretty good time. We stopped in Ogallala, NE to sleep for a few hours and then got back on the road; we were going to make it to Pocatello by dinnertime! Then, as we exited the highway into Kemmerer, WY for our final gas-and-potty stop, the engine went CHUNK CHUNK CHUNK and we slowed to a crawl. We had to stay the night in Kemmerer, and Braden’s dad came to rescue us and take us the rest of the way home the next morning.

Then, a short week later, Abby had to head back to Des Moines for work. Sunday morning Braden drove her to the Salt Lake Airport, where she would board a flight and, after a short layover in Las Vegas, be home by dinnertime. (We really need to stop planning to be places by dinnertime, it never works out!) She made it through security smoothly, but then a series of worst travel experiences occurred: the flight to Vegas was delayed, then the flight to Des Moines was delayed, then the flight to Des Moines was about to take off when the captain was informed that the Des Moines airport was closed due to a sudden snow squall, then the flight was cancelled. Then Abby cried a little and bought a phone charger, then she got on a flight to St. Louis, then she ate a $30 salad that turned out to be kind of gross, then the fire alarm went off in the airport, then that turned out to be a false alarm, then she finally got on a plane to Des Moines, which mysteriously sat on the tarmac for an extra 40 minutes after it landed, and then there were no Ubers in Des Moines! But after a few tries she was able to find an Uber XL to take her home to Indianola, and finally rolled into bed at 2:30 a.m. Then she was late for work the next day.

Best Bike Ride - Minnehaha Park (Minneapolis, Minnesota)

In the middle of Minneapolis there is a huge park with a beautiful waterfall, and across from the waterfall there is a little shack where you can rent the most perfect two-person bikes. We cycled around the park side-by-side, with Frankie strapped in the front, and enjoyed the waterfall and the river, as well as many statues, trees, and flowers. After doodling around for an hour or so, we had worked up quite the appetite, so for lunch we ate yummy seafood at the Sea Salt Eatery, located right in the park.

Most Cinematic Meal - Cafe Zoetrope (San Francisco, California)

After stopping in at the Beat Museum and buying a collection of Gary Snyder poetry at the famed City Lights bookstore, Braden made a beeline to see the plaque commemorating the historic Chilecito neighborhood (where a number of immigrants from Chile lived during the gold rush). The plaque was embedded in the sidewalk next to a beautiful wedge-shaped building with Cafe Zoetrope on the ground floor. Braden said to himself “Zoetrope, like Francis Ford Coppola's production company, American Zoetrope? That’s odd, it can't be FFC’s. He’s just into wineries and crazy over-budget spectacles.” But then he saw the posters for FFC’s most recent crazy over-budget spectacle on the wall of the Cafe. After looking at the menu, Braden decided to keep walking. But then he walked 2 1/2 blocks and realized that all the food in SF is too expensive anyway, and he may never again have the chance to eat in a restaurant owned by the auteur behind Bram Stoker’s Dracula/Jason Schwartzman’s uncle. The mocktail was delicious, as were the Bumbula Al Broccali e Salsiccia (pasta with a red wine cream sauce, broccoli rabe and sausage) and the tiramisu. (Abby: don’t look up how much I spent on this meal, please. It was, in true Francis Ford Coppola style, a crazy over-budget spectacle.)

Biggest Roadside Attraction - Albert the Bull (Audubon, Iowa)

At 30 feet tall, with a 15-foot horn span, Albert the Bull is an absolute unit!

Now we know what's at the end of the rainbow!

Biggest Party - Ottersberg Family Reunion

What happens when you get hundreds of Ottersbergs together? Hilarity. You know what else happens? Happy tastebuds. In July Braden’s family hosted a HUGE family reunion. It was great to catch up with cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws and out-laws. While the food was amazing and the activities were fun, the best part was getting to remember together and make new memories. And seeing everyone in their Grandpa Wayne-style mustaches. The worst part was discovering that we are too out of shape to do the wheelbarrow race.

Wheeeeeeeeeee!

Best Tour Guide/Photographer - Joel (Machu Picchu, Peru)

Our Machu Picchu tour guide gave us a wonderful tour of the ruins. He was full of fun facts and historical contexts, he answered all of Braden’s questions, and he gave us plenty of time alone to take in the majesty of our surroundings. He even made us feel better about the crazy bus ride up the mountain. But where he really went above and beyond were the photos. Every time we handed him a phone to take our photo, he had something new up his sleeve. There were serious shots, fun shots, looking-into-the-distance shots, videos that looked like drone shots, and panoramas where we ran behind him so it looked like there were two of us! Thanks so much Joel, we will treasure these photos forever!

Farthest Distance Traveled - Braden went to Spain!

One of the best parts of Braden’s job as a Spanish professor is that the college he works for has professor-led May Term study abroad experiences. He wasn’t expecting to get to lead one in his first year on campus, but due to some unforeseen circumstances, he had the incredible opportunity to take students to Madrid and Barcelona! He was bummed not to go to our old stomping grounds in Andalusia, but he ate well, spent time with some bright students, attended some great plays, reconnected with old friends, and saw some excellent art.

Best BBQ - Joe's KC BBQ

While Braden was gallivanting around Spain, Vince came to stay with Abby and Frankie, and they decided to have some fun of their own! They took a day trip down to Kansas City to see the Red Sox play the Royals, and before the game they stopped at Joe’s KC BBQ. They waited in line for a very long time, but it was worth it! We ordered a Z-Man sandwich, ribs, pulled pork, and sausage, and it was all very delicious. (Although, to be honest, Vince’s smoked ribs are just as good!) Then we explored KC and went to the game, where the Red Sox beat the Royals 10-1. Go Red Sox!

Most Ice Cream Eaten - TIE! Braden and Frankie

2025 was the year Frankie discovered her favorite treat - ice cream! After a 4th of July celebration during which she was allowed to eat two whole scoops, ice cream became an important part of her whole personality. Her favorite dress? Ice cream dress. Her favorite toy at the library? Ice cream toy. Her favorite place to go? Ice cream store. Her favorite pair of socks? Elsa socks, obviously. But the ice cream ones are a close second.

Frankie would have won this category outright if her competition wasn’t the OG ice cream lover, Braden. After all, where do you think she got her ice cream-loving genes?

Abby is lactose intolerant, and is therefore ineligible to compete in this category.

Best New Job - Librarian

After working as a Substitute Librarian for about 4 months, Abby was promoted to full-time Adult Services Librarian at the Des Moines Public Library in March. That means that, after eleven years of marriage (during 8 of which one or both of us were in school), we are finally both working in the careers that we went to school for! Living the dream, baby!

Best Camping Trip - Bear Lake, Idaho

It’s been a long time since we had a classic Stirling Family camping trip! Great food and lots of snacks? Check. Freezing in tents? Check. Campfire stories? Homemade boat race? Matching t-shirts? Check, check, and check. Plus, we were in Bear Lake, so add in a few raspberry shakes, some light spelunking, and a day at the beach. Pure summertime magic.

Best Zoo - Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium (Omaha, NE)

We all had the day off on Labor Day this year, so we took a day trip to the Omaha Zoo and had a blast! Notable animals we saw include elephants, giraffes, butterflies, tapirs, bats, penguins, sea lions, and Frankie’s favorite - a huge tank of fish!

Most Forms of Transportation Taken in One Week - Peru Trip

Planes - 8

Trains - 2

Buses - 2

Long car rides - 2

This category could have also been titled “Least Amount of Sleep in One Week”.

Most Tulips - Tulip Time (Pella, IA)

300,000 tulips!

Best Thing - Eating Chips

Mom: Frankie, what’s your favorite thing from this year?

Frankie (mouth full of chips): eat chips!

Best of 2024

2024 was a big year for the Clingers! We traveled, we moved, we learned to walk and talk (well, one of us did.) Here are the best things that happened to us this year, in no particular order:

Best Library Storytime - TIE! Lucha Libre Storytime and Cubby Bear Storytime, Des Moines Public Library

Did Abby enjoy meeting local celebrities and hearing stories and songs about baseball and lucha libre wrestling? Yes! Did Frankie enjoy it? No! She was terrified!

No toddlers were permanently traumatized in the taking of these photos.

Best Breakfast (Cambridge Edition) - Brookline Lunch

This Palestinian brunch spot in Central Square is right around the corner from the library Abby worked at for a few years, but we never ate there until this spring! We were intimidated by the long line that is always out the door, but it was definitely worth the wait. The Za’Atar Egg Bowl was incredible, and we’re still dreaming about the Baklava Pancakes with pistachios and rosewater syrup.

Best Breakfast (Indianola Edition) - Crouse Cafe

A quintessential Indianola Saturday morning includes a trip to the farmer’s market, a quick stop at Pageturners Bookstore, and a hearty breakfast at Crouse Cafe. We know it’s not traditional to have dessert after breakfast, but the pie is really good.

Most Naps in Historically Significant Locations - Frankie in Philadelphia

Braden had the great opportunity of presenting a paper at MLA this January, which meant that Abby and Frankie had the opportunity of seeing all the sights in Philadelphia. Something about being bundled up in her stroller in the Philadelphia winter really put Frankie right out. She slept through our visits to the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and the Philadelphia Free Library. She was awake for the Science Center and the Museum of Art, so it wasn’t a total bust!

Highest Lunch - The Pru

“Hey look, it's the Pru!” From Deer Island to Hull, from Davis Square to Chestnut Hill Reservoir, or driving into the city on the 2, we were always on the lookout for the iconic Prudential Tower. For Christmas our dear sister, Maren, gave us entry tickets to the observation deck. The views of Boston were fantastic and the fixed-price lunch was good. Abby particularly enjoyed her mocktail! It was the perfect way to say goodbye to the city we’ve called home for the last six years.

Most Defended Dissertation - Mediations of Popular Belief in the Southern Cone: Museums, Prose, New Media, and Film on the Traditional Guarani Frontier by Braden Clinger

Braden’s dissertation has a ridiculously long title - imagine how long the dissertation itself is! The important thing is that he finished it. He’s planning on making an honest to goodness academic monograph out of it someday, but for now he is happy to let it take a nice little rest on his hard drive.

Dr. Clinger!!!

Most Balloons - Pranksgiving

Abby was startled on the night before Thanksgiving when she was invited into a room covered in balloons, where Brynn and Tony were lying in wait to pop out and surprise her! Braden was befuddled when he opened the bathroom door on Thanksgiving morning and saw about a hundred balloons. Dallas and Brenda were similarly bewildered when they opened the pantry door and another hundred balloons greeted them! We all had so much fun with the balloons on Pranksgiving, plus we didn’t have to help blow them all up, which is a big win. (We are looking forward to more balloons in 2025, considering we are now living in the hot air balloon capital of the Midwest)

Toddler heaven

Best Hockey Game - TIE! BC vs The Friars, Utah Hockey Club vs St. Louis Blues

We are Boston University fans and we are Boston Bruins fans. Let's get that out of the way. But despite our loyalties, we had so much fun cheering on Boston College with friends back in January. Then in September we had the opportunity to cheer the Utah Hockey Club on to victory in their first game ever, right here in Des Moines! Hopefully next time we see UHC they’ll have a real name and they won’t have any embarrassing own goals.

We got tacos after this

Go Eagles!

Go Unnamed Utah Hockey Club!

Longest Drive - Boston to Indianola

In August we packed our Boston lives into a U-Haul and set off for the rolling corn fields of Iowa! Over the 3 1/2 days of driving we saw Niagara Falls, Palmyra, Cuyahoga Valley State Park, Kirtland, Indiana Dunes State Park, and the gas stations of America. Juggling a moving van, a beat up old Prius, a dog, and a 1 year old is a lot. Thanks Julie and Vince for all your help - we couldn’t have done it without you!

Most Fortuitous Moment - The Legend of the Lost Shoe

On our drive through Ohio, we took a pit stop at the old LDS Kirtland townsite to do some touristing. When we were done, Braden changed Fran’s diaper and we got back on the road. A nice man in a pickup truck flagged us down to let us know that he had seen a toddler’s shoe fly off of the back of our car when we turned onto the main road. We flipped the car around to look for the shoe, but did not find it. We drove back toward the freeway and, just as we had the on-ramp in sight, the local storm sirens started going off and our phones all started buzzing with extreme storm warnings. We quickly changed course again and found a mall parking lot where we could hunker down and the moving truck would be protected from the wind. The calm, warm day quickly changed into one of the craziest storms we have ever seen! If we had been on the freeway, who knows how we would have fared. It was a real road trip miracle.

Best Movie Theater Experience - The Creature from the Black Lagoon at the Fleur

We love going to the movies (check out Braden’s Letterboxd account if you dare), and we love repertory showings, but we weren’t able to go out to the theater this year as much as we used to. Tom Cruise would be so disappointed in us. In October the Fleur Cinema and Cafe in Des Moines had a free showing of The Creature from the Black Lagoon. You can’t beat that price, so Abby got tickets for Braden’s birthday. It was a 3D showing and the old-school costumes and effects were so fun. 2 thumbs way, way up!

Longest Graduate Student Strike - BUGWU Strike

Braden was a graduate instructor at Boston University this spring when the Graduate Workers’ Union voted to go on strike. With a lot of support from Abby (then a CPLSA member) and solidarity from union siblings in BUGWU, Braden took to the picket line. The BUGWU strike ended after Braden graduated and moved away.

Cutest gal on the picket line!

Most Whimiscal Museum - Dr. Seuss Museum
When Dallas and Brenda came to visit for Braden's graduation, we decided to take a little road trip out to see the museums in Springfield, Mass. We didn't know that Dallas would be so happy to visit the Dr. Seuss museum. It gave all the Indian Motorcycles in the museum next door a run for their money!

Biggest Fair - Iowa State Fair

Imagine eating fried cheese curds. Now imagine eating a corndog. Now imagine eating an elote bowl. Now a bucket of chocolate chip cookies. Now a turkey leg. Now a slice of ranch and pickle pizza. Now a deep fried oreo. Now imagine viewing–not eating–a life-sized cow sculpted in butter. You have been taken on a culinary survey of the Iowa State Fair. We have just scratched the surface. The good news is that the Iowa State Fair is enormous, so you’ll definitely get your steps in.

"Tiny Jugs Club"

A true Iowa work of art.

Most Minor (League) Baseball - Iowa Cubs

We went to see the I-Cubs in Des Moines. There were a lot of foul balls and some of the most midwestern drunken slant-foul language you’ve ever heard (“Well heckin’ darn!”). We will be going back next season for more baseball action and stadium food.

Fanciest Funeral Potatoes - Communal, Provo Utah

And they were flippin' delicious

Most Librarians in One Location - ALA Conference in San Diego

Abby got the amazing opportunity to attend the American Library Association conference in San Diego in July (Shout out to the CPL Professional Development Fund!) The Southern California weather was perfect for a light cardigan. There were talks by celebrity authors like Trevor Noah, Max Greenfield, Taraji P. Henson, and Anika Noni Rose; there were panels on topics like the freedom to read, AI, and developing diverse collections; and there were lots of free books to lug back to the hotel at the end of the day! It was basically heaven for a library nerd, but after being on the other side of the country for almost a week, it was good to be reunited with Braden and Frankie.

Most Music in One Day - Surprise Eurovision Party on the Day of Somerville Porchfest

Every year we tune in for the Eurovision Song Contest. Alas, this year Eurovision fell on the same Saturday as Somerville’s annual Porchfest. What were two wild and crazy music enthusiasts to do? We invited a couple of friends to enjoy a few of the porch gigs in our neighborhood in the early afternoon, then we all went back to our apartment to watch the show. A few more friends happened to be in the neighborhood for Porchfest, and we invited them up for the party as well. Our tiny apartment was not built to have 7 people in it, but we had a great time! Fran loved the UK’s entry. Abby did NOT like Ireland’s witchy vibes. Ukraine’s entry was moving. And Finland made us laugh more than we have ever laughed. (Let’s just say it started with a giant denim egg and went down/uphill from there.) By the end of the evening we felt blessed to have good friends but also felt the need to sit in silence for a few hours.

Future Eurovision Star?

Best New Job (Braden) - Simpson College

In August Braden started his new position at Simpson College as a 3-year term Assistant Professor. He has great students, fun colleagues, a large and aesthetically pleasing office, and an easy bike ride into the office. He complains about not having as much time to research and write as he would like, but this is an amazing opportunity to teach a variety of Spanish classes.

Best New Job (Abby) - In January Abby started her new position as the Branch Manager of the O’Connell Branch in Cambridge (the cutest library ever!) She loved the staff and patrons there. Unfortunately, she had to put in her notice after only 6 short months to move to Iowa. She is now working as a substitute in the Des Moines Public Library system, as well as getting lots of well-deserved quality time with Frankie.

The O'Connell Branch Library

Most Cinematic Locale - Bridges of Madison County

Dallas and Brenda came to visit us in Iowa in October, and we had a wonderful time! We did lots of fun things and ate lots of delicious food, but our favorite thing we did was our day trip to Winterset to see the Bridges of Madison County. The fall colors were in full bloom, making the drive between the bridges very picturesque, and we also enjoyed strolling around a lovely park and the cute town square. The bridges themselves were very stately, and Frankie had a blast stomping around on the wooden floorboards of each bridge. Someday we’ll watch the movie and say “Hey, I’ve been there!”

Best Birthday Party - Maren and Jacob’s Wedding

Maren and Jacob wanted to get married on the best day of the year, so they chose Abby’s birthday! Everyone was dressed to the nines, the food was awesome, there was cake and dancing, and we got to see family members we hadn’t seen in quite a while. We even sang Happy Birthday to Abby and her cousin Tad (that’s right, it was a wedding/birthday/birthday party!)

Party like you're 31!
